Major Update Adds Switch 2 Compatibility and Sharing Features

Switch Update 20.0.0 Adds Sharing Features

Nintendo has rolled out its 20.0.0 system update for the Switch, bringing a series of notable upgrades that enhance digital game management and compatibility with the upcoming Switch 2. Here are the highlights:

  • Virtual Game Cards: Digital games and DLCs now appear as virtual cards. These can be shared between two Switch devices and “loaned” to family members for 14 days.
  • GameShare: Available only from Switch 2, GameShare lets users wirelessly share local multiplayer games with another Switch. Not supported between two standard Switch consoles.

  • System Transfer: Data can now be migrated from a current Switch to a Switch 2. Cloud-based transfers erase the original device and store the data for up to one year.

  • UI Changes:

    • Nintendo eShop icon updated to red.

    • News icon updated to green.

    • Minor adjustments to user profile visuals.

These changes mark Nintendo’s push toward a more seamless experience across console generations and greater flexibility for multi-device households.
