Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 VRR Support Is not Supported on Dock
Nintendo has officially cleared up the confusion surrounding variable refresh rate (VRR) support on the upcoming Switch 2—and it’s not what was expected.
After early product pages hinted at VRR support for both handheld and docked play, the company now confirms that’s not the case. In a statement to Nintendo Life, Nintendo said, “Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologise for the error.”
VRR(Variable Refresh Rate) is a display technology that helps eliminate screen tearing and stuttering by allowing a monitor or TV to match its refresh rate in real-time to the frame rate output of a game. This creates smoother, more responsive gameplay especially in titles with fluctuating performance and is supported by standards like HDMI VRR, FreeSync, and G-Sync.
As for whether docked VRR could arrive later via a software update, Nintendo says “nothing to announce.” Still, there’s room for optimism—similar to how Sony rolled out VRR to PS5 post-launch, a future update could bring the feature to docked mode. Hardware teardowns even suggest the Switch 2 dock contains a chip capable of supporting HDMI 2.1 features like VRR.
