The Star Wars Battlefront II community has seen an unexpected resurgence. Players, both veterans and newcomers, have been flocking back to the 2017 multiplayer shooter, rekindling excitement around a game once marred by controversy.
Now, that momentum has sparked fresh hope for a long-awaited sequel.
Mats Helge Holm, a former developer who worked on the original launch and Celebration Edition of Battlefront II, recently responded to a fan on Reddit, expressing a strong desire to return to the franchise. According to Holm, he’s not alone.
“Me, and having heard around my group of ex-colleagues, we want to get the gang back together,” Holm wrote, indicating that many former developers share his interest in making Battlefront III a reality.
Battlefront II, released by EA in 2017, faced significant backlash at launch over its aggressive microtransaction system. The most infamous example was the locking of iconic heroes like Darth Vader behind a steep grind—reportedly requiring up to 40 hours of gameplay to unlock a single character. The backlash escalated to the point where EA was pressured to remove microtransactions entirely, and it was widely reported that Disney privately intervened in response to the negative publicity.
Despite the rocky start, the game ultimately won back much of its community thanks to continued updates and a shift toward player-friendly practices—until EA ended post-launch support in 2020. Now, with community-driven popularity once again on the rise, the idea of a new Battlefront game is generating real buzz.
While there’s no official word from EA yet, the call to “get the band back together” may be the spark fans have been waiting for.
