Dive into Darkness: Metro 2033 Redux Is Free on Xbox

A modern classic of post-apocalyptic horror is now completely free to download on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S—and no Xbox Game Pass subscription is required. 4A Games’ Metro 2033 Redux, the acclaimed remaster of the 2010 survival shooter, is currently available for free on the Xbox Store, with no strings attached. However, Microsoft hasn’t said how long the offer will last—so players are encouraged to grab it while it lasts.

Originally praised for its atmosphere, storytelling, and visual design, Metro 2033 was nominated at the 14th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences for Outstanding Achievement in Story and Outstanding Achievement in Visual Engineering. The Redux version improves upon the original with enhanced graphics, smoother gameplay, and updated mechanics that align it more closely with its sequel, Metro: Last Light.

Set in the post-nuclear ruins of Moscow, Metro 2033 Redux follows Artyom, a young man navigating the dark, mutated, and haunted tunnels of the city’s underground metro system—now humanity’s last refuge. The game blends first-person shooter mechanics with survival horror, offering players tight resource management, stealth-based options, and intense combat against both human enemies and terrifying creatures mutated by radiation.

Known for its immersive world-building, minimal HUD, and a strong emphasis on atmosphere and narrative, Metro 2033 Redux remains one of the most memorable single-player FPS experiences of its generation. It’s also a great entry point for newcomers looking to explore the Metro series without any financial commitment.

While the game was recently offered on Steam for free, it’s not currently available as a freebie for PlayStation users. But if that changes, we’ll be sure to keep readers updated.
