Is Squadron 42 Coming to PS6? Here’s Why It Might Happen

While Squadron 42 is officially confirmed only for PC right now, there are growing signs that the long-awaited space epic from Cloud Imperium Games might eventually make its way to PlayStation 6 and other next-gen consoles. Although no console release has been announced, several key hints point toward the possibility of a future port—potentially arriving after the game’s initial PC launch, which is currently slated for 2026.

The most direct clue comes from job listings posted by Cloud Imperium, where the studio specifically requested experience with “current and next-generation consoles.” That’s an unusual ask for a company that has been strictly PC-focused so far, especially for a single-player title like Squadron 42. One notable example was a listing for a Cinematic Animator, which highlighted console experience as a preferred qualification—suggesting they may be building their content with future console support in mind.

Another strong indicator is the very nature of Squadron 42 itself. Unlike its parent game Star Citizen, which is an always-online MMO, Squadron 42 is a standalone single-player campaign, similar in structure to games like Mass Effect or Call of Duty. That makes it significantly easier to port to consoles, as it doesn’t require complex server infrastructure. Console gamers are already familiar with immersive, story-driven experiences, making Squadron 42 a great fit for platforms like the PS6.

On the technical side, the game is being built using StarEngine, Cloud Imperium’s custom engine based on CryEngine—an engine that has powered console games in the past. Since CryEngine has already proven it can run on PlayStation and Xbox hardware, there’s little reason to think StarEngine couldn’t do the same with some optimization.

The timing also aligns well. If Squadron 42 launches in 2026 on PC and the PS6 releases sometime between 2027 and 2028—as many insiders predict—it would make sense for Cloud Imperium to follow up with a next-gen console version. This approach would mirror what other studios have done in recent years: release first on PC, then roll out upgraded editions on new hardware.

Beyond the technical feasibility, there’s also a financial incentive. With hundreds of millions invested into the development of Squadron 42, expanding to consoles would open the doors to a wider audience and help maximize returns. The demand from console players is already strong, and fans have made it clear they’d love to see the game hit next-gen systems.

So, while nothing is officially confirmed yet, all signs suggest that Squadron 42 could eventually launch on PlayStation 6, possibly as a high-end next-gen port after the PC debut. With hints in job postings, technical readiness, matching timelines, and growing market demand, the path to consoles looks more likely than ever.
