Tolkien fans, get ready — a brand-new Lord of the Rings MMORPG is officially in the works, and it’s shaping up to be massive.
Amazon Games is developing the project in partnership with Embracer Group, the current rights-holder of the Middle-earth IP. The game is still early in development but promises to be a fully-fledged open-world MMO set during the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It’s coming to PC and consoles, and aims to deliver a rich, lore-accurate experience built to last for a decade or more.
This isn’t a revival of the older LOTR MMO project that got canceled in 2021 — it’s an entirely new start. The team behind New World is leading development, and the game is expected to include original storytelling, classic locations like Rivendell and Moria, and plenty of multiplayer exploration across Middle-earth.
For longtime fans of The Lord of the Rings Online, don’t worry — that game isn’t going anywhere. Developers of LOTRO confirmed it will continue to operate alongside Amazon’s upcoming MMO.
There’s no official release date yet, and don’t expect to play it anytime soon — best-case scenario, we might see it in 2027 or later. But with Amazon putting real weight behind it, this could be the next big fantasy MMO on the horizon.
