2K has officially shelved the in-development BioShock Remake, originally intended to reintroduce the 2007 classic with modern visuals and mechanics. According to a Bloomberg report, the project was canceled earlier this year after internal reviews deemed progress unsatisfactory.
The same report highlights growing concerns around BioShock 4—the next mainline entry in the series—currently in development at Cloud Chamber. Following a failed creative review, 2K removed studio head Kelley Gilmore and reassigned creative director Hogarth de la Plante, signaling a major internal restructuring. While 2K insists the game is still in development, it admitted that significant rework is needed to elevate the title from “good” to “great.”
This move has stirred the fanbase, many of whom were already frustrated by the lack of updates since the initial BioShock 4 announcement in 2019. With no gameplay reveals or concrete timeline, excitement has given way to skepticism.
Adding complexity to the franchise’s future is Judas, the spiritual successor to BioShock being developed separately by Ken Levine’s studio, Ghost Story Games. Though unaffiliated with Cloud Chamber’s BioShock 4, many fans now see Judas as a more promising continuation of the series’ creative legacy.
As it stands, the world of BioShock is in limbo—stuck between corporate ambitions, creative resets, and the haunting expectations set by its iconic past.
