Build Games with Real Franchises: Roblox’s New License System Explained

Roblox has launched a new official licensing platform designed to make it easier for creators to legally use popular intellectual properties (IPs) in their games. This streamlined system eliminates lengthy negotiations by allowing developers to access well-known franchises from major partners like Sega, Netflix, Lionsgate, and Kodansha directly through Roblox’s platform.

Among the available licenses, Sega offers its Like a Dragon series with conditions such as a minimum of 1,000 daily active users and a 50% share of Robux revenue after fees. Netflix’s popular shows Squid Game and Stranger Things are also available, with no minimum user requirements but a smaller creator revenue share of 15%. Creators must adhere closely to IP guidelines to maintain the integrity of each brand’s world, story, and characters.

The platform features two main components: the License Manager, which allows rights holders to set terms and monitor usage, and the Licenses Catalogue, where developers can browse and apply for licenses. Roblox aims to grow licensed content to account for 10% of all game revenue on its platform and plans to add more IP partners and license types in the near future.

This new licensing initiative opens up exciting opportunities for Roblox creators to build games featuring top franchises legally and easily, while giving IP holders scalable tools to monetize and protect their properties within one of the world’s largest user-generated content platforms.
