Square Enix has officially announced Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, a full remaster of the beloved RPG, during today’s Nintendo Direct. The game is set to release on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on February 5, 2026.
A Classic Returns
Originally released on the PS1 in 2000, Dragon Quest VII is remembered as one of the most expansive entries in the franchise, offering a massive world, dozens of jobs, and a time-traveling story. The game later saw a full 3DS remake in 2013 (with a Western release in 2016), but this new version promises upgraded visuals and quality-of-life changes for modern platforms.
Physical Release is Game-Key Card!
It has been confirmed that the physical Switch 2 edition will release as a Game Key Card, in line with other recent Square Enix titles. While this matches the publisher’s current trend, it has already sparked frustration among collectors who prefer proper cartridges. At RetroPalmetto, our stance is clear: we are fully against Game Key Cards. They undermine the idea of owning a true physical copy, and we strongly encourage players to seek out cartridge editions whenever possible on other platforms.
