Funcom isn’t slowing down the sandstorm. In a new Reddit AMA, the team behind Dune: Awakening detailed its long-term vision for the survival MMO, and it’s clear they’re thinking big. Major free updates are set to arrive every 3 to 4 months, bringing fresh story content, PvE additions, and overall progression
Executive producer Scott Junior confirmed that all major updates will be free, and will run in parallel with optional paid content. PvE maps are also on the horizon, though Funcom’s being coy about whether they’ll land as free expansions or premium add-ons.
In the short term, players can expect a hefty quality-of-life patch in early July—“too many changes to list,” says Junior. No details yet, but patch notes are coming soon as the update nears test-ready status.
The AMA also touched on Dune’s more divisive elements—specifically the vehicle-dominated PvP in the Deep Desert. Players have voiced frustration over air-to-air dogfights replacing meaningful ground combat. While a no-air-vehicle zone was ruled out, creative director Joel Bylos admitted, “The current balance between vehicles and on-foot is not tuned to our liking,” and confirmed tweaks are in the works.
Other upcoming features include:
A dueling system for player challenges
“Deposit all” for water resources
Endgame PvE tweaks to the Landsraad
More contracts to complete
A third faction designed to shake up the current power dynamic
With Dune: Awakening currently flying high on Steam and a console release planned for 2026, the game is just getting started.
