Epic Games Pays Out $126M After Fortnite Deception Backfires

Epic Games is back in the hot seat—again. The FTC is sending out $126 million in refunds to nearly a million Fortnite players after Epic was found using deceptive in-game purchases and shady design tricks that led people—especially kids—into buying stuff they didn’t mean to.

This is part of a massive $245 million settlement Epic agreed to in 2022, and it’s not the first payout. They already handed over $72 million in 2024. This time, players charged between January 2017 and September 2022 are getting refunded. That includes accidental buys, charges made by minors (Jan 2017–Nov 2018), and locked accounts after charge disputes.

The claims deadline is July 9, 2025, so if you’re owed money, visit Federal Trade Commission`s website to issue your refund request.

Epic’s also been forced to stop using “dark patterns”—you know, sneaky menu designs—and they can’t lock your account anymore just because you challenged a charge. About time.
