n a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), the developers acknowledged the community’s desire for continued support. However, they stated that while Mortal Kombat 1 will still receive bug fixes and balance updates, there are no plans for additional DLC characters or story content going forward.
“We are hearing players’ requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1,” the message read. “And, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on.”
The studio further added:
“We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.”
Mortal Kombat 1 launched with a roster of 22 playable fighters, and throughout its post-launch lifecycle—including the Kombat Packs and the Khaos Reigns expansion—13 additional characters were introduced.
Back in September, ahead of the Khaos Reigns launch, series co-creator Ed Boon had assured fans that NetherRealm was committed to supporting MK1 “for a long time.” However, eight months later, the studio has decided to wrap up its content development and move on.
This development has fueled speculation that NetherRealm’s next game could be Injustice 3. The studio has historically alternated between the Mortal Kombat and Injustice franchises, with Mortal Kombat 1 breaking the pattern after MK11, which had fans expecting another Injustice installment.
