Next God of War Game Could Hit in 2026

Ever since God of War Ragnarök wrapped up Kratos’ Norse saga in late 2022, fans have been eagerly waiting to see what comes next. The ending gave a sense of closure, but it also opened the door for a new journey—whether with Kratos, Atreus, or even a completely new mythology.

Expectations for a follow-up were sky-high. Many assumed Santa Monica Studio would take a long break before announcing anything new. But now, with credible rumors pointing to a 2.5D spin-off game featuring a young Kratos in ancient Greece, excitement is building all over again.

And here’s the thing—this game could absolutely snap, even if it’s smaller in scope.

The rumored Metroidvania style (think Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown) fits today’s market perfectly: tight gameplay, strong lore, and shorter, replayable adventures. Pair that with God of War’s iconic combat, and it’s got serious breakout potential—even as a spin-off.

Plus, with the cancelation of a rumored live-service God of War project, Sony may be doubling down on narrative-rich, premium experiences, which fans already know and love from this franchise.

If the rumors hold, and the game is revealed at a State of Play or The Game Awards, expect hype levels to spike fast. Even without Kratos swinging his axe in 4K open worlds again, a fresh, focused return to his Greek roots might be just what fans didn’t know they needed.
