Nintendo is set to launch the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, and the next-gen console brings with it a host of new features and improvements that go beyond hardware. Alongside a brand-new launch title, Mario Kart World, the Switch 2 will introduce support for GameCube games and enhanced Nintendo 64 (N64) gameplay through Nintendo Switch Online (NSO).
For the first time, GameCube games will be available via NSO’s Expansion Pack on the Nintendo Switch 2. Classic titles such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and SoulCalibur II will be accessible to subscribers, complete with improved resolution and modern control support. To enhance the nostalgic experience, Nintendo is also releasing a wireless GameCube-style controller, compatible with these titles.
This marks a significant leap in Nintendo’s emulation offerings, bringing a beloved library of games to modern players with smoother performance and more flexible controls.

Nintendo is also enhancing the N64 experience on the Switch 2 with several exclusive quality-of-life features:
- Rewind Function: Players can now rewind their gameplay by a few seconds to recover from mistakes, such as failed jumps or missed opportunities—perfect for titles like Super Mario 64. The interface suggests even longer rewind durations may be possible.
- CRT Filter: A visual option that replicates the look of classic CRT TVs by adding scanlines, smoothing jagged edges, and boosting the retro aesthetic of older games.
Button Remapping: While remapping is available on both the original Switch and the Switch 2, only the newer console allows for deep customization. Players can assign commands to modern buttons like ZL or adjust analog stick inputs for more precise control.
These upgrades aim to make playing N64 titles easier and more authentic, blending nostalgia with modern convenience.
The Nintendo Switch 2 boasts major hardware improvements over its predecessor. It features a 7.9-inch 1080p display with 120Hz refresh rate, 4K support when docked, and 256GB of internal storage. The updated Joy-Con 2 controllers offer magnetic attachments and support mouse-like input in compatible games.
Another standout feature is GameChat, a built-in voice and video chat system for up to 12 players, using the console’s new microphone and USB-C webcam compatibility.
The base model of the Switch 2 will retail for $449.99, while a launch bundle including Mario Kart World will be available for $499.99. Pre-orders are already live and in high demand, with many major retailers reporting limited stock.
While the Switch 2 will support most existing Nintendo Switch titles, around 100 games and apps may face compatibility issues at launch. This includes popular services like Hulu, Crunchyroll, and games like Rocket League, which are expected to receive updates post-launch.
With support for GameCube games, exclusive upgrades to N64 emulation, and a powerful new hardware platform, the Nintendo Switch 2 looks to be a major leap forward in both performance and retro gaming. Whether you’re excited to dive into Mario Kart World or relive classics with enhanced visuals and controls, the Switch 2 is shaping up to be one of Nintendo’s most feature-packed consoles yet.
