PayPal has been removed as a payment option for most Steam users worldwide, with support now limited to six currencies: EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD, and USD. Valve says the change, which began in early July 2025, isn’t a technical error. Instead, PayPal’s acquiring bank decided to stop processing Steam transactions in other currencies, effectively cutting off the service in many countries.
There’s no set timeline for PayPal’s return in affected regions. Valve hopes to restore it eventually, but for now recommends alternatives like Steam Wallet codes, gift cards, or local payment services. The company is also exploring new payment options to fill the gap.
The move caused confusion among players, with some PayPal support reps blaming Valve. However, Valve insists the decision came from PayPal’s banking partner. Similar issues have hit gaming payments before, involving companies like Mastercard, Visa, and Stripe, but Valve says this case is unrelated to its recent NSFW content policy changes.
The change was first spotted in countries such as Poland, Norway, Switzerland, and Mexico, where PayPal quietly disappeared from checkout. For players in supported currency regions, nothing has changed—but for others, alternative payment methods are now the only option. Valve is working on a solution, but warns not to expect PayPal back soon unless you use one of the supported currencies.
