Great news for Witcher fans: a full remake of the original The Witcher (2007) is officially underway. CD Projekt Red confirmed the classic RPG is being rebuilt from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5, delivering modern graphics and gameplay improvements while preserving the game’s core narrative.
The project, codenamed “Canis Majoris,” is developed by Fool’s Theory, a Polish studio founded by former CD Projekt Red veterans who worked on The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3. Key figures like CEO Jakub Rokosz, a veteran quest designer on the Witcher series, are leading the remake. Although CDPR isn’t directly developing the game, they provide creative supervision to ensure it stays true to the original’s spirit with fresh updates.
One exciting addition to the remake is a reimagined story and expanded narrative content. The remake aims to deepen Geralt of Rivia’s early adventures by adding new quests, characters, and dialogue, enriching the lore and world-building while maintaining the original story’s foundation. Alongside these story expansions, the remake will adopt an open-world design, offering players more freedom to explore compared to the original’s linear structure.
While no official release date has been announced, industry insiders expect the remake to launch around late 2026 or early 2027, likely after The Witcher 4. This remake promises to deliver a fresh experience for longtime fans and new players alike, blending nostalgia with next-gen technology and enhanced storytelling.
